Set in the 1940s, "The Bluest Eye" is about the tragic life of a young 11-year-old black girl from Ohio, named Pecola Breedlove. Pecola wants nothing more than to be loved by her family and schoolmates. Instead, she faces constant ridicule and abuse. She blames her dark skin and prays for blue eyes, sure that love will follow. With rich language and bold vision, this powerful adaptation of an American classic explores the crippling toll that a legacy of racism has taken on a community, a family, and an innocent girl. When you've written for "M*A*S*H", "The Bob Newhart Show", "All in the Family" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", been called "one of the funniest writers alive" ("The Good Life") and penned nine beloved relationship comedies for the stage, what's there left to do? Write a 10th beloved relationship comedy, of course! Now you can be among the first to catch the world premiere of Jerry Mayer's "Mistakes Were Made" at Santa Monica Playhouse, which reunites the comedy veteran with acclaimed director Chris DeCarlo. Empathy: Beneath the Surface presents a multi-disciplinary perspective on the idea of empathy and personal agency. Featuring Hung Liu, John Nava, Simphiwe Ndzube, Ami Vitale, Marisa Caichiolo, Marjorie Salvaterra and Tom Everhart. Comprised of six distinct galleries covering more than 5,000-square feet, the exhibition centers around universal themes of loss, resilience and hope. Museum visitors will encounter large-scale representational paintings, contemporary sculpture, mixed media, installation, a blue-chip virtual reality film, cinematic photography and stunning modern tapestries, navigating through each artist’s personal narrative while experiencing a collective expression of empathy and connection. "It is imperative to discuss empathy and for us to remain connected as a community, particularly as we mark the one-year anniversary of the Borderline shooting and the Woolsey wildfire," says Lynn Farrand, curator of the exhibition. "In these artists, we see an empathic, conscious choice to go beneath the surface of what separates us to reveal the universal experiences and emotions that bind us together." The exhibition extends CMATO's mission to create community through the arts. In addition, CMATO has created a participatory art space for visitors to reflect on the year through the wide array of feelings they went through. Common Threads, is an interactive space where visitors will use different colored strings ('threads') to map out these universal feelings which cross all boundaries and bind, tie or connect us together.
